Recycling solutions are vital components of the circular economy. They set out ways in which the packaging that you put into circulation can be reused as a resource. The goals are to keep raw materials in circulation for as long as possible, reduce packaging waste and reduce the use of primary raw materials.

    Recyclability starts with the packaging.

    Due to the different material combinations used in packaging and the fact that the infrastructure in Germany is still growing, there is currently no universal recycling solution. Design, composition and separability determine the extent to which an item
    of packaging or a packaged product can be recycled.

    Unmixed materials and easily recyclable substances such as plastics, glass, metal or paper can be sorted and recovered.

    Harder to recycle – risk of rejection

    Due to their material composition, separability or condition, composite materials, heavily contaminated waste or mixed plastics are difficult (i.e. require substantially greater effort and/or special solutions) or impossible to recover.

    Different types of recycling solutions.

    When it comes to recycling solutions, a distinction is made between closed
    and open loops. As the name suggests, clozed loopTM is a closed-loop solution: packaging or packaged products are turned back into packaging or materials for applications of equal value, which are returned to the production process.

    Ideal scenario

    In an ideal scenario, recycling is seamless: all packaging is collected, processed and turned into new packaging. This creates a closed loop
    with minimal material losses.

    Current reality

    In reality, many open loops still exist alongside closed loops. Mixed materials, contamination or a lack of separation options mean that a
    high percentage of packaging cannot be used again.

    Thanks to technological innovation, better sorting and legal requirements, the proportion of closed loops is increasing. Policymakers are accelerating this change with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR),
    which mandates recyclable design, the use of recycled materials
    and higher recycling rates.
